Hares are a type of small, hooved mammal that are often considered pests. However, hares have many interesting and unique characteristics that make them worthy of study. They are generally shy animals, but they can be quite curious. They have short tail and long ears. Hares also have a very soft fur which they use to keep cool in warm climates.

What Do Hares Eat?

Hares are herbivores and their diet consists mostly of plants. They eat a variety of different plants, depending on the season. In the spring, they eat buds, flowers, and leaves from trees and shrubs. In the summer, they eat grasses, clover, and other plants. In the fall, they eat nuts, berries, and other fruits. And in the winter, they eat bark and twigs from trees and shrubs.

How Do Hares Find Their Food?

Hares get their food by either eating plants that grow in the wild or by scavenging for food that has been left behind by other animals. They are very good at finding food, even when it is hidden or hard to reach. Hares also have a very strong sense of smell which helps them find food even when they can’t see it.

Where Do Hares Live?

Hares are found in every other continent except Antarctica. They are typically found in open fields, meadows, and prairies. They live in a variety of habitats, including deserts, grasslands, forests, and wetlands. Unlike rabbits, hares do not dig burrows but rather use natural shelters such as hollow logs or dense vegetation.

Different Species Of Hare

There are many different species of hares, all of which are in the Leporidae family. The most common hare is the European brown hare, which is found throughout Europe and parts of Asia. Other notable species include the black-tailed jackrabbit, snowshoe hare, Arctic hare and Cape hare.

Are There Differences Between Hares And Rabbits

Hares belong to the same family as rabbits, Leporidae and also the same order, Lagomorpha but different species. However, there are differences between the the the species.

One main difference is that hares are born with fur and their eyes open, while rabbits are born without fur and their eyes closed. Hares also have longer ears than rabbits, and are generally larger in size. Another difference is that hares live in areas where there is more cover such as tall grass or woodland, while rabbits prefer areas with shorter grass.

Hares And Predators

One of the many predators of hares are coyotes. They are very efficient in their hunting and can take down prey much larger than themselves. Coyotes typically hunt in packs, which makes it easier to bring down a hare. Wolves are also predators of hares and can be very successful in hunting them. Lynx are another predator of hares and are able to take them down with their sharp claws. Bobcats are also predators of hares and can kill them with their powerful jaws. Aerial predators of hares include, hawks, owls and eagle.

Importance Of Hares To Their Predators

Hares are important to predators because they are a food source. They are also a great way for predators to practice their hunting skills. By hunting hares, predators can hone their skills for when they hunt larger prey.
